Grief Support

Grief Support Groups

For the first year after my husband’s death, my daughter and I went to a grief support group that was organized through the local hospice center and met in person every other week for an hour and a half. While she joined a group with kids her age, I joined the group of parents that met at the same time. Both groups were led by trained volunteer facilitators. At the time, I didn’t know anyone else my age who had lost a spouse and found it incredibly helpful to talk to other widowed parents. I know my daughter found comfort in being around other children who had lost a parent.

When Covid shut down the world and the support group went virtual, I found support groups on Facebook. I’ll list here support groups that meet online and in person, but by no means is this a comprehensive list.

Bereavement Camps

There are many bereavement camps across the US for kids and teens who have lost a parent, and I’ve listed them here. Most of these are free, funded by donors, but those that aren’t free often will waive the fee for those in need.
